What does HPHT diamond mean?
HPHT stands for high-pressure high-temperature, a diamond-growing method that simulates the natural diamond formation conditions found deep in the earth. A carbon source is placed under extreme pressure (around 5-6 GPa) and temperature (1300-1600 °C) and crystallizes into diamond over a controlled growth cycle. HPHT diamonds are chemically, physically, and optically identical to mined diamonds — the only difference is the origin.

HPHT diamond process overview
The HPHT process uses a large press — typically a belt press, cubic press, or split-sphere (BARS) press — to apply extreme pressure and heat to a carbon source in the presence of a metal solvent (flux). The flux melts the carbon, which then migrates to a diamond seed crystal and grows layer by layer. Growth cycles range from several days to a few weeks depending on the target carat weight. After growth, the rough diamond is extracted, cut, and polished the same way as mined rough.
HPHT vs CVD: what wholesale buyers should know
HPHT and CVD are the two main lab-grown diamond production methods. HPHT goods often appear in bright white commercial ranges (D–G color) and can be more available in smaller sizes and melee. CVD tends to produce larger stones and offers more shape variety.
