HPHT Diamond: Meaning, Process, and Wholesale Buying Guide

Learn what HPHT diamond means, how the high-pressure high-temperature process works, and how wholesale buyers can source HPHT lab-grown diamonds for commercial programs.

Short answer

Learn what HPHT diamond means, how the high-pressure high-temperature process works, and how wholesale buyers can source HPHT lab-grown diamonds for commercial programs.

What does HPHT diamond mean?

HPHT stands for high-pressure high-temperature, a diamond-growing method that simulates the natural diamond formation conditions found deep in the earth. A carbon source is placed under extreme pressure (around 5-6 GPa) and temperature (1300-1600 °C) and crystallizes into diamond over a controlled growth cycle. HPHT diamonds are chemically, physically, and optically identical to mined diamonds — the only difference is the origin.

  • HPHT = high-pressure high-temperature
  • Simulates natural diamond formation conditions
  • Produces chemically identical diamonds to mined stones
  • Commonly yields bright white D–G color goods

HPHT diamond process overview

The HPHT process uses a large press — typically a belt press, cubic press, or split-sphere (BARS) press — to apply extreme pressure and heat to a carbon source in the presence of a metal solvent (flux). The flux melts the carbon, which then migrates to a diamond seed crystal and grows layer by layer. Growth cycles range from several days to a few weeks depending on the target carat weight. After growth, the rough diamond is extracted, cut, and polished the same way as mined rough.

HPHT vs CVD: what wholesale buyers should know

HPHT and CVD are the two main lab-grown diamond production methods. HPHT goods often appear in bright white commercial ranges (D–G color) and can be more available in smaller sizes and melee. CVD tends to produce larger stones and offers more shape variety. From a wholesale buying perspective, neither method is inherently better — the right choice depends on the target grade range, certificate route, and how the finished jewelry will be positioned.

  • HPHT: bright white D–G color, good for commercial ranges
  • CVD: larger stones, more shape variety, flexible pricing
  • Both can be IGI or GIA certified
  • Choose by buying program, not by process name alone

How to buy HPHT lab-grown diamonds wholesale

When sourcing HPHT lab-grown diamonds, send the target shape, carat range, color, clarity, certificate preference, monthly volume, and destination market. HPHT goods are available as selected stones, certified inventory, melee parcels, and bulk assortments. A complete RFQ lets the sales desk match current HPHT stock, certificate options, and export timing.
